Brilliant as usual Shin! I love how you lay out the science, and the very human reactions to data... demonstrating how powerful our biases are. One thing to keep in mind is that we all do this especially for our most deeply-held opinions and hypotheses... and scientists are trained to keep an eye out for these blind spots in our judgement, and even we do this. It is unfortunately human nature. But, we may say, perhaps we need stronger organizational enforcers to ensure this doesn't happen again... but no, organizations are groups of people and tend to be even more conservative and self-protective than individuals... the Catholic Church and Boy Scouts protecting pedophiles in their midst are just a couple examples of organizational resistance to basic admission of error and changing their ways. The WHO and CDC will make similar mistakes in the future (hopefully not on respiratory viruses, but I'm afraid they will indeed make the same mistake). SD
