I agree that AMZN is looking to disrupt the clothing industry as a whole - from manufacturing to distribution to the retail experience. You've pointed to the two important barriers, the online experience (compared to going and trying on the clothes at a brick-n-mortar store), and the tech of custom-made (versus mass-production of limited inventory options).
AMZN has the online infrastructure, but not the replacement for trying on clothes. AMZN has the shipping infrastructure mostly in place, but not the custom-manufacturing tech, as you point out.
Without specific technologies or companies in place, I think this will be a longer haul. AMZN struggled with groceries for close to a decade before buying Whole Foods. There is no equivalent in the clothing space that will address those two barriers - are you aware of any candidates?
Anyways, great article!
I'm a long-term AMZN investor, so find these topics fascinating and personally relevant! ;)
Best,
