Sounds like the picture-perfect childhood (if you managed to survive it). The classic definition of survivorship bias!! ;)

Although this is not a perfect measure, U.S. infant mortality today is about 1/30th of the rate in 1950:

Total mortality today in the U.S. is about half of that in 1950:

Finally, this graph shows that today about 0.5% of U.S. kids die before the age of 5, but in 1960 that was about 3%:

So I think you are right to feel like you made it out of your childhood by the skin of your teeth. Because you did!
