Battery production does involve some environmentally unfriendly compounds, but I think the level of toxicity is exaggerated by folks against electric vehicles. That said, certain conditions do pose particular hazards — if a li ion battery catches fire, the fumes are toxic and the flames are hard to extinguish. That said, there is a lot to cover there, worth an article or two on its own. I think the next big thing there is battery recycling, which is what Tesla’s former CTO J.B. Straubel left to go and do — he’s at a startup aiming to recycle Li ion batteries. This is one of Tesla’s long-stated goals as well. Good questions, duuude! Thanks again, S. D.
